  1. Very good. Made EXACTLY like recipe and was great. I really hate it when some people deviate from the recipe and then give it a low rating. Really p***** me off.

  2. LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS salad! Not too much mayonnaise, lovely crunchy veggies and the dressing is perfect. It's even better the next day. The first time I made this I ate it for lunch for 3 straight days. Never got tired of it. Made it again tonight for tomorrow's company potluck so decided to give a thumbs up to the poster while I was here. Thanks for what has turned out to be my favorite macaroni salad and I am a huge macaroni salad fan.

  3. perfect no nonsense macaroni salad recipe...I've made it twice now - each time doubling it since I had potlucks each time...one for them, one for us. today I added leftover ham - also nice (what isn't good with ham added? :)). I like that it has green onion and not regular. makes the whole thing just great and very hometown summery. Thanks for posting!

  4. This is wonderful! I was looking for a salad without hard boiled eggs and cheese chunks because my son doesn't care for them in salads. And this fit the bill. And darn tasty too!!! Thanks!

  5. This was a very good recipe for your basic macaroni salad. The only change I made was that I added in a few dashes of garlic powder. I really enjoyed the crunch of the veggies in this salad. I also loved that this did not have hard boiled eggs in it as well. I think that you could easily use this as a base recipe and add in anything else you might enjoy. Thanks for posting.

FAQs

Why does my macaroni salad taste bland? ›

Making sure the water is salty enough ensures the macaroni is seasoned through (even after rinsing in cold water) and the salad will not be bland. 2. The noodles weren't sufficiently drained. Let the macaroni drain completely in a colander to ensure the sauce isn't diluted with water.

How to make macaroni salad with Hellmann's mayonnaise? ›

METHOD
  1. Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain and rinse with cold water until completely cool.
  2. Combine Hellmann's® Real Mayonnaise, vinegar, dijon mustard, sugar, salt and pepper in large bowl. Stir in macaroni, celery, green pepper and onion. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Should you rinse macaroni when making macaroni salad? ›

Pasta should never, ever be rinsed for a warm dish. The starch in the water is what helps the sauce adhere to your pasta. The only time you should ever rinse your pasta is when you are going to use it in a cold dish like a pasta salad or when you are not going to use it immediately.

Should you rinse pasta when making pasta salad? ›

If you're making a dish that will be served chilled or at room temp—think cold soba, rice noodles, pasta salad—you do want to rinse so that you get toothsome (sorry) individual strands rather than one big gummy clump. Certain types of noodles benefit from a rinse in almost all applications.

What can I add to macaroni to make it taste better? ›

Here are five tips to elevate your next dinner to include extra flavor and texture.
  1. Add extra cheese to your dish.
  2. Mix in some hot sauce and chicken to make buffalo chicken mac n' cheese.
  3. Add in vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and spinach.

Why does my macaroni salad not stay creamy? ›

The key to keeping macaroni salad from drying out is the pasta. If you don't cook it enough, the pasta won't grab on to the dressing and will dry out. If you overcook the pasta, it will be completely soggy and gross. Cook the pasta just right, and your macaroni salad will stay perfectly creamy.

How do you keep macaroni salad from absorbing mayonnaise? ›

Pasta absorbs liquids, because it is made of starch, and starch absorbs water. Tossing the pasta with oil will reduce the absorption, by coating them in a water-repellent layer. Beyond this, the solution is simple: don't drain as much water from the cooked pasta, and add more dressing.

How do you cut the salt taste in macaroni salad? ›

Acid: Adding vinegar or lemon juice does a great job of balancing saltiness. Sweetness: You can also add a dash of honey or sugar. Opposites attract here and create balance. Fat: Another fix is adding some fat, a few pads or butter or a healthy glug of olive oil can absorb some of that saltiness.

Why does Hellmann's mayonnaise look different? ›

Why does the recycled plastic packaging look darker now? PCR is inherently darker in color, but is 100% food safe and approved by the FDA. Rest assured, the mayonnaise and mayonnaise dressing inside our jars and bottles has not changed and has the same delicious taste you expect from Hellmann's.

Why is it called Russian salad? ›

Russian salad was originally called Oliver salad based on the Moscow-based Belgian chef who invented it. During the 20th century, the dish spread throughout Europe and adopted the name Russian salad.

Why do Hawaiians love macaroni salad? ›

It's said that Hawaiian macaroni salad made its way onto the plate lunch once Europeans introduced dry elbow macaroni and mayonnaise to the islands. Locals quickly adopted these ingredients because mac salad was affordable, not perishable (unlike a potato salad), and easy to make at home.

Why is it called Israeli salad? ›

It was adopted by Jewish immigrants to the Levant in the late 19th century, who found the locally grown Kirby cucumbers and tomatoes in popular local salad.
